Tess has a lifetime of experience with dogs, both showing and breeding, now specialising in reactivity, she's had a range of dogs from Papillions and Staffordhire Bull Terriers to Leonbergers and Great Danes. Since 2021 she has been immersed in the world of balanced dog training, her journey started with George the Great Dane, he was very dog reactive, so she reached out to a balanced trainer who helped her and George, he later became her mentor and that’s how she started professionally training dogs.
Since then she dove head first into getting as much education and knowledge as she possibly can, through shadowing other trainers, courses like NDTF Cert III in dog behaviour and training, seminars, podcasts, books etc and just getting her hands on as many dogs as possible, none of which will ever stop. George made such a full circle he is now her decoy dog, she also has a female English Staffy Ladybug, who will take over the role one day. She's since helped many dog owners to better understand their dogs, set up clear communication and create a more harmonious relationship.
Her favourite part of working with dogs are the moments where they show their people time and time again that they’re smarter than they first thought!

Balanced dog training is a comprehensive approach to behavior modification that uses a blend of techniques from all four quadrants of operant conditioning: positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, and negative punishment. This method aims to provide a flexible and comprehensive framework by incorporating rewards for desired behaviors alongside appropriate corrections for unwanted ones.
Dogs learn best by not only knowing what they've done is good, but they need a very clear understanding and boundaries of what is not allowed!
Your dog must have a recent C5 vaccination. You will need some high value treats, and whatever you normally use on your dog, we will discuss appropriate tools and our recommendations in the session and we have all the tools you will need to get started!!
Puppies can start training as early as 8 weeks old. It's important to start early to establish good habits and prevent bad ones from forming.
100% All dogs can be trained, the outcome may take a bit longer the older the dog is as they have been rehearsing it for longer!
No, playing tug does not create aggression; it's a common myth that playing tug-of-war with a dog can cause aggression. Instead, it's a healthy outlet for a dog's natural predatory instincts, a good way to provide mental and physical exercise, and a powerful tool for building a positive relationship and clear communication with your dog. However, it's essential to play tug the right way, with proper boundaries, at Balanced Beasties we teach you how to play!!!
